Postural weightlifting: interview with Paolo Campra, creator of the postural education program that subverts some clichés.

ISEF graduate, Doctor in Sports Science, Kinesiologist, FIPE Technician, Olympic Weightlifting Coach and Senior Personal Trainer, FIT Physical Trainer I level Tennis and Padel.

Since 2006 he has been involved in postural and functional re-education at his kinesiology studio, since 2018 he has expanded his activity by addressing the world of fitness understood as "gymnastics for health" especially in the preventive and re-educational fields. For this purpose, in 2022 you founded Movilab, the movement laboratory.

Postural weightlifting, an oxymoron might appear, in the same definition we find a sporting discipline that is mostly associated with the risk of injury, or in any case not indicated for improving one's state of health, even more so for young and very young people, alongside another activity, also recommended and encouraged by the medical profession for a correct physical development or for the solution of some problems. Can you explain better how the two activities can coexist together? Can you define in a few words what the method you have developed consists of?

That's right, right from the search for the name of this activity I wanted to highlight what the international scientific community has certified, effectively sanctioning what can be considered an epochal paradigm shift: from overload harmful to development and health, to overload necessary for harmonious development and health. In every age group.

Why the technical gestures of Olympic Weightlifting?

Because ever since I approached this historic and wonderful discipline for the first time, I realized the incredible value that the technical gestures of snatching and swinging, as well as various complementary and auxiliary ones, possessed invaluable requirements from a postural point of view, in terms of mobility, rapidity and precision of movements, of perfect static dynamic control of the general postural structure, of the column, of the shoulder girdle, of the coxofemoral joint and of the tibiotarsal.

.

How did the idea of the Postural Weightlifting method come about?

As a professional in the movement devoted to health, I was looking for a method that focused on this aspect, which for my vision is absolutely central, but to be reconciled with a fun and captivating activity.
In my idea, the young and very young should have wanted to come to the gym, rather than undergoing it as a family imposition or a medical prescription.
The idea of the "Pesistica Posturale®" method was born as a response to different needs, or priorities:
– those of parents, looking for a healthy activity supervised by professionals, an alternative motor education to the sedentary lifestyle and hypokinesia of their children.
– those of the kids, looking for something fun and stimulating, which could lay the foundations for a physique that is not only healthy, but also more responsive to an aesthetic ideal, which in this age acts as a strong motivational component, always if channeled and made to live without exaggerations and exasperations.

What equipment is needed to carry out the activity?

Part of the equipment will be essential to build the foundations of strength and technique on weightlifting gestures.
The 3,5 and 7 kg technical barbells are essential (for learning the technique in all age groups), as well as hollow discs, fractional plates, Olympic barbells and traditional discs, dumbbells of various sizes. One or more barbell racks and supports, one or more flat/incline benches.

Another part of the equipment for the more functional, educational and general physical preparation part can be made up of various cross training and functional training equipment: PVC or wooden tubes or sticks, Kettlebells, suspension training straps, different type, Plio Box, Medball, Slamball, Flow bag.

And also obstacles, cones, markers, rings, and everything that can be useful for building courses for speed, dexterity, agility, flexibility.

.

In the light of what you said, wouldn't it be enough to dedicate yourself to Olympic weightlifting?

Actually Postural Weightlifting could just be, and my hope is that it will become, the stepping stone towards Olympic Weightlifting.
The idea is precisely to broaden the base of young and very young people who approach this discipline without particular competitive aims and that families can free themselves from the barbell taboo at a young age.
Unlike what happens to those who approach competition directly, in our case the request is directed primarily towards a very targeted and specific objective, which primarily concerns health and a harmonious development of different aspects.
The technical aspect, even if taken care of down to the smallest detail, will be addressed to competition only and possibly in a second phase.
Our young athletes ask us to participate in the first competitions reserved for them, and like Movilab we are organizing ourselves to satisfy their desire.
