Smash D-Ball: Explosive Strength Training
La Smash D-Ball is one of the medicine balls that has had the greatest diffusion in recent years, because in the field of functional training it is the one that best lends itself to training the explosive force (power), i.e. the level of force delivered by the muscle in a very short time range. It's not easy to focus on the main factor of explosive strength training, but perhaps the component neuromuscular it is the most important. In an explosive action, in a few fractions of a second, what happens inside the organism is something extraordinary on a motor level. Just think of the frequency of nerve impulses that propagate from the central nervous system to the peripheral one and vice versa, determining the coordinated contraction of the muscles from which a given complex movement.
The Smash D-Balls, soft and non-bouncing medicine balls, represent a very effective tool for training this aspect of strength, thanks to the possibility of use even heavy loads by slamming them violently to the ground maximally explosive e coordinated. very little rebound it also allows an immediate recovery of the ball, with the possibility of running intense series of smashes also useful for refining the technique, educating the body to more efficient neuro-motor circuits. This type of training can be inserted in any context of athletic training, also because training explosive strength with the medicine ball implies multi-joint and an intense core training (first of all, shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle).
From the point of view of loads, weights of 6 or 8 kg are recommended, up to 15 kg for advanced level athletes.
Example of exercise: the Power Slam
Wanting to give a concrete example of a multi-joint exercise, let's try to describe the Power slam. The initial phase consists in taking the ball from the ground, bringing it to the chest by executing a clean, with the elbows that must always be close to the sides. One follows squatting in full squat, being careful not to bring the elbows outside the knees, keeping the ball always in line with the chest.
From this position the athlete will have to let himself fall backwards, performing a rolling both forward and backward on the column. It is important to remember, in the squat return phase, not to close the knees nor to move the elbows away from the hips, using the strength of the abdomen so that the anteversion of the pelvis can be recovered immediately. The ascent phase from the squat will be fast, powerful, until performing a jump, with the ball always on the chest.
Once the maximum flight phase has been reached, arms at 90°, the ball must be carried behind the neck, slamming it to the ground with force before landing. In this phase the athlete will have to make the most of the explosive force of abdomen and back. The correct direction of throwing the ball must be slightly forward of the body's center of gravity. Finally, the moment the ball impacts the floor, the athlete will execute a new squatting quickly, so fast as to take advantage of the very small rebound of the medicine ball for grab it again.
In order to train power and explosive strength, they must therefore be carried out extremely dynamic exercises able to obtain the highest combination of strength and speed. In this context, the use of Smash D-Ball offers great prospects also in terms of exercise variations in relation to the reference sport.
