Applications of medicine balls with handles
La medicine ball it boasts ancient origins and is one of the best known and most widespread tools due to its great versatility, due to the wide range of weights and construction solutions available. In fact, our production is characterized by well five models, with weights ranging from two to one hundred kilograms.
It is therefore a tool suitable for athletic training, fitness, To functional rehabilitation and being a heavy ball it can be used in almost all exercises with overload, especially if dynamic. The medicine ball is also training because it must be grasped, that is, it is necessary to hold it between the hands with strength and coordination appropriate to the weight, the characteristics of the ball and the type of exercise.
It is therefore not only an overload, but an overload that cannot be challenged, difficult to grasp, not very ergonomic. This latter feature represents one of the most important coaching qualities of the medicine ball, but also one of its limitations. There may in fact be exercises for which one more ergonomic grip, which can be challenged, such as that with a handle, is preferable. For this reason the line of Medicine Balls with Handles (also said Double Grip Medicine Ball o Medicine Ball with Handles), where the handles are obtained from the structure of the ball itself.
Trained qualities
The tool remains a medicine ball, it loses the characteristic of being able to make regular rebounds, it can still be grasped with two hands like a normal medicine ball but, thanks to the handles, it can be firmly held tightening the grips with the hand and, importantly, it can be used with only one hand. From the point of view of training, this possibility, training with one hand in the manner of a kettlebell or to perform rowing-type exercises, represents one of the main characteristics of the tool.
Another characteristic, closely related to contestability, is given by the possibility of obtaining high levels of performance in the training of power, with particular reference to the component speed: the so-called explosive force. To train explosive strength (the ability of our neuromuscular system to express maximum strength in the shortest possible time) extremely dynamic exercises are in fact necessary, capable of obtaining the highest combination of strength and speed. In this, medicine balls with handles are particularly suitable in the case of complex exercises, designed according to the reference sports.
Medicine balls with handles are also useful for work isometry, static works to develop strength and resistance, in which the muscles involved are led to deliver force (tension) that is not sufficient to produce movement of bone heads. Furthermore, a tool that can be held and used in an extremely dynamic way, stimulates the athlete in terms of grip, of the neuromuscular circuits, refining sensitivity, proprioception, coordination, motor skills.
Exercises: the execution of the Plyo Push Up
The latter is particularly widespread in combat sports and can be considered emblematic of the potential of Double Grip Medicine Balls. It is certainly a complex exercise, intended for all those athletes who seek to train explosive strength at the highest level. In the start-up phase, obsessive attention is required for thehandle, in order to preserve the health of the hand and wrist. The thumb must be placed in such a way as to avoid the pressure that could be created on the scaphoid, the upper edge of the medicine ball handle must coincide with the lower edge of the hand. As a result, the thumb will be free to exert pressure over the forefinger so that the grip is firm.
Having grabbed the ball, the athlete must assume the position Plank. It's important to remember that the Plank is an exercise with maximum core activation and this will allow an optimal Push Up start. The push Up it should be performed by partially adducting and rotating the scapulae. Contracted latissimus dorsi, glutes, abs and quadriceps. The goal of the Push Up is to train the anterior chain of the upper limbs, mainly the pectoral, but due to the posture assumed and the instability of the medicine ball, the exercise will be global.
Finally, for it to be effective training for explosive strength, it will be performed by expressing a eccentric phase so explosive as to cause a small “flight phase” in which the medicine ball will impact the athlete's chest and then violently return to the ground and the athlete back into the plank position.
From the point of view of the loads, the weight from is recommended 10 kg (code 0498) for advanced level athletes.
