Strength, mobility, flexibility: these versatile tools can have a wide range of uses, from warming up and stretching to rehabilitation and holistic exercises. Elastics and fitness bands are available in different sizes and resistances.

Elastic bands, Fit tube, Big Tubing

Elastic bands in rolls (latex free) are particularly practical and economical and owe their great success to this.

The band solution in fact allows you to roll the elastic around your hands, shortening or lengthening it according to the exercise and intensity you wish to achieve.

This makes latex bands useful in many contexts: fitness, rehabilitation, Pilates, athletic training, up to group classes.

The 25 m roll solution then allows the elastic to be cut to the desired size.

Big Tubing finds application in a variety of contexts; from functional fitness to athletic training.

Restrained running is certainly the best known exercise, although these elastics lend themselves to many applications. The Easy version, medium-low resistance, makes it possible to use the elastic in great safety, even with elderly people, and to perform a variety of exercises, such as lateral running, running backwards, four-legged running, jumping, or climbing on raised floors.

The Power Big Tubing, with double the resistance of the Easy model, is useful in all those contexts in which you work with athletes as part of specific restrained running or strengthening exercises.

Again, two or three elastic bands can be used at the same time as required.

Resistance Bands, Fit Tubes, Big Tubing: A Complete Guide

Elastic resistance is one of the most versatile training methods available. It covers a wide range of applications, from scapulohumeral mobility in post-surgical rehabilitation to resistance sprint training with big tubing from 60 kg. In this category, you’ll find three distinct types: flat latex resistance bands (in rolls or closed loops), fit tubes with handles, and big tubing with a waist belt for assisted running. Each type meets specific needs. Glute mini-bands do not provide the same workout as a power big tubing used in tandem with a partner holding the band. The choice depends on the setting: a personal training studio, a CrossFit box, group activity or on-pitch fitness training.

What is elastic resistance: definition and function

A resistance band is a device that generates a force proportional to its elongation, following a variable resistance curve. Unlike the gravitational load of a dumbbell, the resistance increases as the fabric or rubber tube is stretched. This behaviour produces two useful effects: at the point of maximum muscle contraction, resistance is at its peak, and the load is free from inertia. Hence its usefulness in rehabilitation (gentle resistance curves, control of range of motion) and in athletic training (resistance-based accelerations without impact-related joint stress). The most commonly used materials are multi-layered natural latex, thermoplastic rubber and technical fabric with an internal elastic insert.

Types of elastic bands and tubing Sidea

Latex tape in rolls

The flat latex bands (codes 0520–0524, 0560–0562) are supplied in 25-metre rolls, colour-coded according to resistance. The advantage is the flexibility in cutting: you can cut 1.2-metre lengths for Pilates and group activities, or longer sections for two-handed pull-up exercises. They are the standard choice in physiotherapy practices and motor rehabilitation centres due to their combination of affordability and the need for frequent replacement.

Elastic loops and mini-bands

Closed loops (Latex Loop 0511–0512, Power Loop 0513–0518, Hip Band 0606, Pop Elastics 0605) are continuous loops designed for glute activation exercises, mobility work and pull-up assistance. The textile band Available in grey (light) and black (medium), it solves the classic problem of Latex loops slipping down your shorts during clamshells and monster walks.

Fit Tube Pro and Strong

Fit tubes (0567-0569, 0569/90 Strong Black) are rubber tubes with ergonomic handles at each end. Suitable for pushing, pulling, standing chest presses and unilateral exercises. The Coulisse Bag 0100 allows trainers working from home or outdoors to carry complete sets of equipment.

Big Tubing for a controlled run

Easy Big Tubing 1696 (30 kg resistance) and Power Big Tubing 1699/1 (60 kg) are part of the range designed for athletic training. A waist belt for the athlete, with the rope held by a partner or anchored. Applications: resistance sprints, lateral running, backward movements, all-fours and jumps. Kits 1695 and 1699 include the belts and the accessories coupling.

How to choose: a guide to use cases

Personal training studios and small boutique gyms

A complete set of Power Loop 0513-0518 covers virtually all your warm-up, activation and assistance exercises. Add a couple of Fit Tubes 0567-0569 for the upper body and you’ve got a workout station elastics complete without taking up more than one shelf. It’s useful to combine the foam roller for the tissue preparation stage.

CrossFit boxes and functional training studios

Consumption is high. It’s best to start with 25-metre rolls of latex bands (0520-0524), which can be cut to size as required for band-assisted pull-ups and mobility work, plus a generous supply of textile bands (0600-0601) for glute activation during group warm-ups. A couple of 1699 large tubing bands for power work off the rack.

Advanced home gyms and garage gyms

If you’re training on your own, the 90 cm 0569/90 Strong Black fitness tube is ideal for press and rowing exercises, acting as a replacement for a cable machine in compact spaces. Add two or three latex loops of different resistance levels and you’ve got a progressive overload system for supplementary training.

Fitness coaches and teams

The Power Big Tubing 1699 kit is the go-to tool for resistance sprints, simulated starts from the blocks and strength-speed training on the field. Easy Big Tubing 1696 is designed for youth categories, returning from injury or general fitness training. Two or three elastic bands used in parallel allow for precise adjustment of resistance according to the athlete’s body weight.

Rehabilitation and outpatient clinics

Colour-coded latex bands in rolls are the standard. They allow you to prescribe customised segments for patients to take home and to adjust the resistance as their treatment progresses.

Technical glossary

Progressive resistance
An intrinsic property of elastic material whereby the restoring force increases as it is stretched. This allows for maximum loads at the peak of muscle contraction, when the muscle exerts the greatest force.
Restrained run
An exercise in which the athlete runs forwards whilst a resistance band attached to the waist provides resistance from behind. It develops acceleration and lower-body power without the impact typically associated with running downhill or external loading.
Loop band
A continuous elastic loop with no ends. Used for glute activation, hip mobility, to assist with calisthenics exercises such as pull-ups and dips, and for joint distraction.
Mini-band
A small loop (approximately 25–30 cm) used primarily for neuromuscular activation of the gluteus medius and minimus muscles, in exercises such as the monster walk, clamshell and side step.
Latex-free
Elastic made from synthetic materials that are alternatives to natural latex. Essential for users with a latex allergy; commonly used in healthcare and rehabilitation settings.
Assisted pull-up
Pull-ups on the bar assisted by an elastic band, which reduces the actual load on the body during the lower part of the movement. The resistance of the elastic band decreases during the final contraction, when the athlete is at their strongest.
A hard-fought sprint
A sprint training method using external resistance (big tubing, sled, parachute) to develop the acceleration phase. The load must be such that it does not significantly alter the movement pattern.
ROM (Range of Motion)
Range of joint motion. Resistance bands allow you to work within specific ranges of motion (ROM) whilst controlling the resistance, which is useful in rehabilitation and mobility training.

Domande frequenti - Bande elastiche, Fit tube, Big Tubing

  • The fit tube is a 90–140 cm rubber tube with handles at each end, designed for manual pressing, rowing and unilateral pulling exercises. Big tubing features a waist belt and offers much higher resistance levels (30 or 60 kg), and is intended for assisted running, resistance sprints and dynamic field work. They are complementary tools, not alternatives.
  • It depends on the target muscle and the exercise. For glute activation, a lightweight resistance band is sufficient. For assisted pull-ups, you need a strong loop that can support 30–50% of your body weight. In rehabilitation, you always start with the lowest resistance and progress over time. Having 3–4 resistance levels available offers the most flexibility.
  • Easy Big Tubing 1696 is suitable for lateral runs, backward movements, all-fours exercises, the over-60s, youth categories and returning from injury. Power Big Tubing 1699/1 is designed for resistance sprints, adult athletes and specific power training. Many trainers use them together, employing two or three bands in parallel to fine-tune the load.
  • No. Natural latex is not recommended for people with allergies. In such cases, latex-free versions or textile bands 0600–0601 with a synthetic rubber elastic insert covered in fabric should be preferred. In the healthcare and rehabilitation sectors, the availability of latex-free alternatives is now a standard requirement.
  • It depends on the intensity of use and environmental conditions. In a personal training studio with daily use, a high-quality fit tube typically lasts 12–18 months before showing signs of wear (micro-cracks at the junction with the handle). They should be kept away from heat sources and abrasive surfaces. Rolls of latex bands wear out more quickly as they are cut frequently.
  • For auxiliary exercises, yes. The Fit Tube Strong 0569/90 allows you to perform press exercises, rowing, face pulls, triceps exercises and standing chest flies by securing it to a rack or a fixed point. The difference compared to a pulley system is the absence of a constant load and the progressive resistance, which is actually an advantage for supplementary work. However, it does not replace cable machines for maximum strength exercises.
  • Latex loops tend to slip down your shorts during monster walks and side steps, rolling up on themselves. The 0600 and 0601 textile bands and the 0606 hip bands have a non-slip inner surface that keeps them in place even after 20–30 repetitions. In group activity circuits, this radically improves the quality of the workout.
  • The athlete wears the belt, whilst a partner (or a fixed anchor) holds the rope from behind. The athlete runs forwards against the resistance for short distances (10–20 m), maintaining correct running form. If running form is compromised, the load is too high: switch to a less resistant elastic band or reduce the initial stretch. Typical volume: 6–10 repetitions per set.
  • Yes, for those who use resistance bands intensively. A roll allows you to cut lengths exactly to the required size for each exercise or patient. It is the standard in rehabilitation centres and group exercise studios where 15–20 pieces are needed at any one time. For individual use, pre-cut lengths are more practical.
  • Yes, the Power Loop 0513-0518 in the heavier sizes are also used to add resistance to the upper phase of deadlifts and bench presses (band-assisted training) or to create accommodative tension. However, they must be used in conjunction with a rack with low pins or heavy weight plates as an anchor; do not improvise with unstable set-ups.
