What is Bench Press & Powerlifting: definition and function

The term ‘Bench & Powerlifting’ refers to the range of structural supports that enable free-weight lifts to be performed: flat bench press, back squat, front squat, military press, hip thrust, seal row and their variations. These are passive pieces of equipment. They have no pulleys, cables or fixed paths of movement: the load is managed entirely by the athlete, who must control the direction, speed and stabilisation.

How to choose: a guide to use cases

Commercial gyms and weight rooms

You’ll need at least one IPF-compliant flat bench (9020), one adjustable bench with castors (9025) and a powerlifting rack (9045). If your clientele is focused on bodybuilding, add the Seal Row 9021 and at least one hip thrust station. For weightlifting, the adjustable jerk block is almost essential.

PT studios and small spaces

The Functional Bench 9024 is the most versatile choice: it allows you to perform a wide range of exercises in a small space. Combined with a compact rack and a set of hexagonal dumbbells, it is suitable for most hypertrophy and strength training programmes.

Advanced home gym and garage gym

The 9025 adjustable bench comes with castors for easy movement; a powerlifting rack is recommended if you have sufficient headroom (at least 220 cm of clear space above), otherwise opt for a lower-profile frame. The 9122K Hip Thrust Kit is a good alternative if you don’t want a dedicated platform.

CrossFit Box

For traditional WODs, you mainly need racks and flat benches that can withstand rapid changes to the setup. The 9115 jerk block is useful for dedicated strength work outside of WODs, as part of Olympic weightlifting training.

Technical glossary

J-hook
Rack-mounted J-shaped supports that hold the barbell in the starting position for squats and bench presses. They are height-adjustable along the rack’s vertical uprights and coated in UHMW or a soft material to prevent damage to the barbell’s knurling.
Spotter arm

Prone row on a raised bench, with feet not touching the floor. This prevents cheating with the back and legs, isolating the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids and middle trapezius. Widely used in training for latissimus dorsi hypertrophy.
Jerk block
Raised blocks used in weightlifting to position the barbell at shoulder or hip height, isolating the jerk phase or allowing for partial repetitions on pull exercises. Height-adjustable to suit different lifts.
Standard IPF
Technical specifications set by the International Powerlifting Federation for competition equipment: bench dimensions, rack height, minimum load capacity. An IPF-compliant bench is between 122 and 125 cm long and between 42 and 45 cm high from the floor.
Powerlifting

In a commercial weight room, both are needed: the fixed bench for maximum strength training, and the adjustable bench for a variety of exercises.
