DROP MATS - Pillow Top Mattresses
Drop Mats are a pair of mattresses made to absorb the fall of a loaded barbell, dimensions 100 x 60 x h15 cm, with double-layer inner padding, PVC cover and eyelets for venting.
For some years now, exercises typical of weight training, snatch and sprinting, alongside other strength exercises, deadlifts, Strongman Smash D-Ball, etc., have become part of athletic training and functional fitness. With them, dropping, i.e. dropping the barbell, or other equipment, after completing an exercise, became widespread.
The practice, sometimes abused, has led to problems with vibration and noise, especially in multi-activity or heavily frequented gyms. This is why we have produced Drop Mats, or weightlifting crash mats, or landing barbell pads, specially designed to absorb the fall of the barbell or heavy equipment, reducing vibration and noise.
The main feature of these mattresses, apart from the robustness of the PVC cover, is the double layer of internal padding. A sheet of EVA, high density, combined with a 10 cm thick block of polyurethane foam, medium density, guarantee the best balance between absorption capacity and rebound. A balance that is difficult to achieve in general, as usable weights can vary from a few kilograms to hundreds of kilograms.
An often requested piece of information is the density figure, kg/m³ of the foam. This value in itself is not significant as an indication of the product's characteristics; on the contrary, it is misleading with respect to the product's functionality because it leads one to think that higher density corresponds to higher quality.
Drop mats perform their function well if they cushion, soundproof, do not move and bounce weights as little as possible, even weights other than discs, such as Atlas Stones.
The main problem, however, is evaluating the reference weight. It is one thing to calibrate Drop Mats for 50 kg, it is another to calibrate cushions for 200 kg, and it is another to build it so that it can perform effectively over the widest weight range. The elastic performance of polyurethane is not strictly related to weight per m³ but to the type of foam used. Add to this the important role played by the type of cover, PVC in our case, and the size of the vents for the elimination of air during compression.
After several tests, considering these factors, we combined 10 cm of polyurethane complex spong with a 5 cm block of EVA placed at the base of the cushion. The polyurethane has the function of absorbing, allowing the weight to sink in, while the EVA, which has different elastic characteristics, has the function of stopping the transfer of energy once the polyurethane has passed.
The Drop Mats can also be used on Wooden Jerk Plyoblocks or as elevated supports for floor stands in combination with Wooden Step cod.9114.
