What is the difference between competition kettlebells and traditional cast-iron kettlebells?

Competition kettlebells (gyria) maintain the same external dimensions from 4 to 48 kg, with only the thickness of the metal shell being adjusted or lead inserts added. This ensures that the technical movement remains consistent as the load increases, which is essential for competitive athletes and strength and conditioning coaches working on the snatch, jerk and long cycle. Traditional cast-iron kettlebells, on the other hand, vary proportionally in volume: a 32 kg model is physically larger than a 12 kg one, altering the rack position and the distribution of load on the wrist.

Why does a 4 kg kettlebell cost more than an 8 kg or 12 kg one?

The 4 kg model (item no. 2189) is made entirely of aluminium rather than steel. This design choice is necessary to maintain the standard dimensions of the series whilst drastically reducing the weight. Aluminium requires a more complex manufacturing process and involves a higher raw material cost than the steel used for kettlebells weighing 8 kg and above. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of equipment, suitable for lighter athletes, beginners or rehabilitation programmes where the same footprint is required with a minimal load.

Who is a Competition Kettlebell recommended for, as opposed to a Strong or Vinyl kettlebell?

Competition kettlebells are suitable for Girevoy Sport athletes, strength and conditioning coaches following StrongFirst or SFG protocols, powerlifters and weightlifters who use kettlebells as a technical accessory. Their consistent dimensions make them ideal for those training at high volumes (10+ minutes of continuous snatches) or performing strength cycles with linear progressions. Strong kettlebells (raw cast iron) are best suited to ballistic swings and short-duration power exercises. Vinyl kettlebells are designed for group activities, commercial fitness circuits and beginners using them at home.

How do I choose the starting weight when beginning with Competition Kettlebells?

For male athletes with no previous experience: 12–16 kg for Turkish get-ups and cleans, 16–20 kg for two-handed swings. For female athletes: 8–12 kg for get-ups, 12–16 kg for swings. Those coming from a background in Olympic weightlifting or powerlifting can start at 20–24 kg (men) or 16 kg (women). The Ø33 mm handle requires some adjustment if you are used to Olympic barbells (Ø28 mm). Competitive Girevoy Sport programmes often use 24 kg (men’s category) or 16 kg (women’s category) as the competition standard. We recommend testing the weight on the clean & press for 5 repetitions: if your technique remains clean, the load is appropriate.

What is the advantage of a 60 mm handle-to-body distance?

The 60 mm distance between the handle and the spherical body reduces the leverage effect on the wrist during the rack position (clean, jerk, long cycle). With shorter distances (40–50 mm, typical of commercial models), the weight tends to "fall" outwards, forcing the wrist into extension and overloading tendons and ligaments. The 60 mm distance, combined with the Ø33 mm diameter, allows the kettlebell to rest on the forearm without placing passive strain on the wrist, enabling prolonged sets (over 100 repetitions) without joint fatigue. This feature is crucial for Girevoy Sport athletes and for high-volume metabolic conditioning programmes.

Are competition kettlebells suitable for a commercial gym, or are they only for competitive athletes?

They are suitable for any setting where the aim is to teach correct technique and ensure linear progression. In a commercial weight room, they allow for standardised instruction: an instructor can demonstrate the movement using 16 kg, and the trainee can replicate it using 8 kg, employing exactly the same posture and trajectory. In CrossFit boxes, they are useful for WODs involving high-volume swings, cleans or snatches. In athletic training centres, they allow you to programme strength cycles with precise increments (4 kg per step) without having to readjust the technical setup. The only drawback is the higher cost compared to Strong or Vinyl kettlebells, though this is justified by their durability and precision of construction.

How do you look after competition kettlebells, and how long do they last?

The painted surface should be cleaned regularly with a damp cloth after use to remove sweat and chalk. Avoid harsh cleaning products or wire brushes, as these will damage the finish. In high-humidity environments (gyms without air conditioning, garage gyms), check the base periodically for signs of oxidation, particularly on models with a lead insert (40–48 kg). The steel handle naturally develops a patina with use; if it becomes too smooth, sand it lightly with 400-grit sandpaper to restore grip. With routine maintenance, Competition Kettlebells maintain a weight tolerance of ±1% for over 10 years, even with intensive professional use (over 200 sessions per year).

Can I use Competition Kettlebells for ballistic exercises such as heavy swings or bottoms-up presses?

Yes, but there are some technical considerations. For heavy swings (over 32 kg) or explosive accelerations, the painted surface offers less grip than the raw cast iron of the Strong Kettlebells. In bottom-up exercises (handle facing downwards), the Ø33 mm diameter requires greater grip strength than thinner handles. The Competition range is optimised for high-volume cyclic movements (snatch, jerk, long cycle) where dimensional consistency matters more than texture. For raw power work, maximum acceleration or destabilising exercises, the Strong kettlebells in raw cast iron may be more suitable.

COMPETITION KETTLEBELL

Competition kettlebells, also known by the Russian term gyria, are tools designed to international standards to ensure uniformity in size, regardless of weight. This feature is essential to enable a consistent technical gesture at every stage of training and competition, benefiting precision, biomechanics and efficiency of movement.

Our Competition Kettlebell series meets these requirements: each gyria maintains constant external dimensions, varying only the internal weight. Different construction solutions are used to achieve this. Kettlebells from 8 kg to 36 kg are made by modifying the thickness of the metal shell. The higher weights (40, 44 and 48 kg) include a fixed lead insert to achieve the desired mass. The 4 kg model (code 2189), the only one of its kind, is made of aluminium to maintain the standard structure with reduced weight. This results in a slightly higher cost compared to 8 or 12 kg kettlebells, which is justified by the special nature of the material and production process.

The handle has a regular rectangular shape, with a straight profile in both the horizontal part and the vertical uprights, and a uniform diameter of 33 mm. This thickness - greater than that of an Olympic barbell (28 mm) - represents an excellent compromise between effectiveness in grip, due to the better 'hand wrapping' around the handle, and comfort in use, avoiding the so-called 'cutting grip'.

The distance between the handle and spherical body is 60 mm, a measure designed to reduce the leverage effect on the wrist and improve stability in the rack position. The width of the handle, on the other hand, is 128 mm, ensuring sufficient space even for athletes with large hands or for performing two-handed exercises.

The 4 kg model (code 2189), to maintain the standard dimensions, is made of aluminium.

The characteristics of the kettlebell in modern times: a true one-handed training system

Although the kettlebell is a piece of equipment that first appeared in the sporting world with the Girevoy Sport competitions in its Gyria conformation (Russian name for the competition version), in the last decade it has gained a foothold in all physical-sports contexts, from commercial gyms to professional sports clubs of various disciplines, and even sees some applications in functional rehabilitation and post-traumatic recovery centres. The reason for this success is given by the extraordinary intrinsic technical characteristics of this tool, which is as simple and rough as it is effective and even 'innovative' in some people's eyes. The off-centre mass with respect to the handle makes it an extremely versatile tool, from its use in traditional weight training exercises (Squat, Press, Overhead Squat) to the most representative ballistic exercises of Kettlebell Training (Swing, Clean, Snatch, Jerk, Push Press). It is precisely this fundamental characteristic that encapsulates its essence: the possibility of developing wide trajectories, at maximum expressible power and in complete safety, while developing great grip strength.

In which sports does Kettlebell Training have applications?

In all those requiring coordination, stability, strength, speed, power and endurance. If we add to these abilities the joint mobility that is indirectly conditioned in the eccentric phases of ballistic exercises, and the proprioception in controlling a highly unstable implement along wide trajectories that tend to unbalance the body and consequently condition its ability to control along the axis of its centre of gravity, it is soon explained how Kettlebell Training becomes a valid tool for conditioning the coordination and conditional abilities of every sporting discipline.

Why does the kettlebell also fit perfectly into workouts aimed at general aesthetic fitness?

Whether you are a professional bodybuilding practitioner or a simple training enthusiast who wants to improve your body composition, this equipment allows you to fill the gaps in your strength and endurance, making up for the shortcomings of traditional weight room and cardio training. In fact, Kettlebell Training is part of the more general concept of Functional Training, which aims to involve the entire body in every single exercise, resulting in a neuro-muscular and metabolic strength impact far superior to traditional sector training. This translates into stronger muscles with greater quality and a leaner, better performing physique.

Postural and post-traumatic rehabilitation

The basis of postural and post-injury recovery is the person's full awareness of body structure and movements in space. This passes through a work that, in addition to being based on the global articular mobility of the body, must then lead to the development of a new postural set-up both in static and especially in dynamic. The person must acquire control of his or her neutral posture and must be able to move in normal daily and sporting activities, without creating imbalances in body areas not dedicated to that particular movement. Having an instrument with the characteristics of the kettlebell is an excellent aid for a physiotherapist or personal trainer, during the phase of building a person's stability, coordination and strength, characteristics that must be trained hand in hand with joint mobility and proprioception, in order to achieve an effective and long-lasting recovery.

Underlying these extraordinary applications is obviously a perfect technical knowledge of the tool, its features and functionality. Exercise technique with equipment such as kettlebells cannot be improvised, on pain not only of not achieving the desired goals, but also of a high probability of incurring injuries during their use.

Those who want to approach training with this equipment must absolutely rely on instructors who have the technical and professional skills to adapt their applications to each type of request and specificity of the person, and who are able to transfer the appropriate technical skills in the execution of the exercises as effectively as possible and in a short time. Technique (with respect for the biomechanics of the human body), aims, didactic progressions and training programming are the pillars of an instructor's sports training, and even more so if you want to appreciate the kettlebell not just as an end in itself, but as a real training system.
