Matwork is practised without equipment on a mat, using small props such as a Pilates Ring, Soft Ball or resistance bands to increase resistance and proprioception. The Reformer is a machine with a carriage that slides along rails, featuring springs with variable resistance and a cable system: it allows you to work whilst taking the weight off the spine, with over 200 standardised exercises. Professional studios offer both forms of exercise, often in separate sessions.
-
A standard Reformer is fitted with four springs of varying resistance (typically light, medium, strong and extra-strong), which can be combined to adjust the load from approximately 2 to over 30 kg equivalent. The resistance is not linear like that of a free weight: it increases as the spring is stretched, generating an eccentric-concentric load pattern typical of the Pilates method.
-
For classic Matwork, the ideal thickness is 8–15 mm: sufficient to protect the spine during roll-up and roll-over exercises, without compromising stability in balancing positions. Thicknesses of less than 6 mm (typical for yoga) are uncomfortable for prolonged work on the back. For prolonged floor exercises or patients undergoing rehabilitation, thicknesses of up to 20 mm may be used.
-
It is a flexible hoop with two padded handles, with a standard diameter of 36–38 cm. It is used to engage the adductors, abductors, pectorals and core through isometric contractions or dynamic movements. It is an essential small prop in the Pilates matwork method: it enhances proprioception, provides tactile feedback on alignment and intensifies exercises such as the Hundred, inner thigh lifts or chest expansion.
-
Yes, provided you have a dedicated space measuring at least 2.5 x 1 metre, plus some clearance at the sides. The Reformer Sidea, made from solid wood, weighs over 50 kg and requires a level floor.
-
EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) is softer and suitable for gentle self-myofascial release, mobility work and beginners. Cross-linked polyethylene is denser and harder: it withstands repeated use in a commercial setting and applies more intense pressure to deep tissues. For use in a shared Pilates studio, polyethylene has a longer service life.
-
The diameter should be proportionate to height: 55 cm for heights up to 165 cm, 65 cm up to 180 cm, and 75 cm for heights over 180 cm. When seated, the hips should be slightly higher than the knees, with the thighbone parallel to the floor. For use in a professional studio, check the load capacity (minimum 300 kg static) and the anti-burst certification (ABS, Anti-Burst System).
-
The Reformer can be placed directly on a technical floor, but we recommend laying a rubber mat or a 20–40 mm tatami mat underneath to dampen vibrations and protect the parquet flooring. In studios that alternate between Reformer and Matwork classes, continuous technical flooring simplifies space management and improves comfort during floor exercises.
