Bench Press & Powerlifting: A Comprehensive Guide
The Benches & Powerlifting category brings together Sidea equipment designed for strength training with barbells and free weights, without any guided mechanisms. You’ll find flat and adjustable benches, powerlifting racks with spotters, and stations Hip Thrust and the Seal Row, as well as adjustable jerk blocks for overhead exercises. These pieces of equipment are designed for those who plan sessions dedicated to strength training and its fundamentals – such as squats, bench presses, deadlifts and their variations – in commercial weight rooms, personal training studios or well-equipped home gyms. Nine products covering the three fundamental powerlifting movements and the main accessories for strength conditioning and physical training.
What is Bench Press & Powerlifting: definition and function
The term ‘Bench & Powerlifting’ refers to the range of structural supports that enable free-weight lifts to be performed: flat bench press, back squat, front squat, military press, hip thrust, seal row and their variations. These are passive pieces of equipment. They have no pulleys, cables or fixed paths of movement: the load is managed entirely by the athlete, who must control the direction, speed and stabilisation.
This makes them central to athletic training. Free movement, unhindered by auxiliary mechanical restrictions, activates the stabilising muscles by replicating real-life movement patterns and offers greater performance benefits than constrained movements, which rarely meet the stabilisation demands of the real world. A certified powerlifting rack can support static loads of well over 300 kg on the J-hooks, with spotter arms that engage in the event of failure, making exercises such as the flat bench press or squats safe. The bench press bench, on the other hand, has precise specifications regarding height from the floor and backrest width, in accordance with IPF standards.
Types of Bench Presses & Powerlifting
Flat and adjustable benches
Fixed benches such as the 9020 Flat Bench are designed for heavy bench presses: they feature a rigid backrest, a stable base and an IPF-compliant height. Adjustable benches, such as the 9025 Professional Adjustable Bench with wheels and the 9017 Flex Bench, offer incline, decline and flat positions for dumbbell exercises, bench curls and seated presses. The wheels at the back make it easy to move the bench around the gym between different stations.
Racks and powerlifting stations
The 9045 Powerlifting Rack is the centrepiece of the strength training area: height-adjustable J-hooks, side spotter arms, a support base for the spotter, and support arms with adjustable angle. This rack meets all the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Compatible with powerlifting barbells 20 kg and bumper plates.
Specialist benches
The 9021 Seal Row Bench allows for a prone row without cheating: chest resting on the bench, legs hanging down, total focus on the latissimus dorsi and rhomboids. The 9024 Functional Bench is modular for hybrid exercises and offers the highest degree of versatility in its use. The 9122 Hip Thrust Platform Bench and the 9122K Hip Thrust Kit isolate glute work with a barbell – a pattern that has now become standard in elite athletic training, women’s training and the rehabilitation of weak glutes.
Weightlifting blocks
The 9115 ADJ Metal Jerk Block is designed for weightlifting: the jerk, split jerk and push press from overhead positions. It is height-adjustable to suit different phases of the lift and reduce the impact of the barbell hitting the floor on weightlifting platforms.
How to choose: a guide to use cases
Commercial gyms and weight rooms
You’ll need at least one IPF-compliant flat bench (9020), one adjustable bench with castors (9025) and a powerlifting rack (9045). If your clientele is focused on bodybuilding, add the Seal Row 9021 and at least one hip thrust station. For weightlifting, the adjustable jerk block is almost essential.
PT studios and small spaces
The Functional Bench 9024 is the most versatile choice: it allows you to perform a wide range of exercises in a small space. Combined with a compact rack and a set of hexagonal dumbbells, it is suitable for most hypertrophy and strength training programmes.
Advanced home gym and garage gym
The 9025 adjustable bench comes with castors for easy movement; a powerlifting rack is recommended if you have sufficient headroom (at least 220 cm of clear space above), otherwise opt for a lower-profile frame. The 9122K Hip Thrust Kit is a good alternative if you don’t want a dedicated platform.
CrossFit Box
For traditional WODs, you mainly need racks and flat benches that can withstand rapid changes to the setup. The 9115 jerk block is useful for dedicated strength work outside of WODs, as part of Olympic weightlifting training.
Technical glossary
- J-hook
- Rack-mounted J-shaped supports that hold the barbell in the starting position for squats and bench presses. They are height-adjustable along the rack’s vertical uprights and coated in UHMW or a soft material to prevent damage to the barbell’s knurling.
- Spotter arm
- Horizontal safety arms on the rack that stop the barbell should the athlete fail. Height-adjustable, they allow you to train to failure safely even without a human spotter. Standard on serious powerlifting racks.
- Hip thrust
- A barbell hip exercise, performed with the back resting against a bench or dedicated platform, designed to maximise activation of the gluteus maximus. Introduced by Bret Contreras, it has now become standard practice in athletic training and women’s bodybuilding.
- Seal row
- Prone row on a raised bench, with feet not touching the floor. This prevents cheating with the back and legs, isolating the latissimus dorsi, rhomboids and middle trapezius. Widely used in training for latissimus dorsi hypertrophy.
- Jerk block
- Raised blocks used in weightlifting to position the barbell at shoulder or hip height, isolating the jerk phase or allowing for partial repetitions on pull exercises. Height-adjustable to suit different lifts.
- Standard IPF
- Technical specifications set by the International Powerlifting Federation for competition equipment: bench dimensions, rack height, minimum load capacity. An IPF-compliant bench is between 122 and 125 cm long and between 42 and 45 cm high from the floor.
- Powerlifting
- A strength-training discipline based on three fundamental lifts: the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. Unlike Olympic weightlifting, it does not involve explosive overhead movements with complex trajectories, but rather tests of pure strength through controlled movements with linear trajectories.
- Bumper plate
- Rubber or polyurethane discs of the same diameter (450 mm), regardless of weight, designed to be dropped onto the floor without damaging the flooring or the barbell. Standard for weightlifting and CrossFit.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bench Press & Powerlifting
In the FAQs below, you’ll find answers on the differences between fixed and adjustable benches, how to choose a home gym rack, the weight capacity of the Sidea models, and when you really need a specialised bench such as the Seal Row or the Hip Thrust.
Why choose Sidea
Sidea has been manufacturing and distributing professional fitness equipment since 1999 from its warehouse in Gambettola, covering over 4,000 m² in Emilia-Romagna. We are an official StrongFirst distributor and Luxiaojun, who were at FIBO as exhibitors and sponsors of the StrongFirst Summit of Strength. The Gym Design service produces bespoke 3D renderings for CrossFit boxes, gyms, athletic training centres and high-end home gyms: if you’re setting up a complete strength training area, our technical department will help you size up racks, benches and weight platforms based on floor space and user flow.

-
A fixed flat bench, such as the 9020, has a rigid, horizontal backrest, optimised for heavy bench presses in accordance with IPF standards. The adjustable version, such as the 9025 or the 9017 Flex Bench, allows for different angles (flat, incline, decline, vertical) for dumbbell exercises, seated military presses and curls. In a commercial weight room, both are needed: the fixed bench for maximum strength training, and the adjustable bench for a variety of exercises.
-
The 9045 Powerlifting Rack is primarily designed for squats, bench presses and static lifts with a barbell. For Olympic weightlifting (snatch, clean & jerk), a dedicated weightlifting platform with adjustable jerk blocks, such as the 9115, is preferable, as it better accommodates the release of the barbell after the jerk. The rack can, however, be used for a weightlifter’s auxiliary strength training.
-
The 9021 Seal Row Bench is designed with a specific height (approximately 60–65 cm) and an ergonomic chest support that allows for a prone row without cheating with the legs or back. A standard bench raised on blocks does not provide the same isolation and creates instability. If your goal is serious back hypertrophy or advanced bodybuilding programmes, a dedicated bench makes all the difference.
-
The 9045 Powerlifting Rack requires at least 220–230 cm of clear height from floor to ceiling. Bear in mind that you need to be able to perform standing military presses with a barbell overhead without risking it touching the ceiling. If your garage has a lower ceiling, there are more compact squat-only racks or wall-mounted half-rack solutions available.
-
Yes, but there are differences. The 9122K is a compact kit that fits onto existing benches and takes up less space: ideal for home gyms or personal training studios with limited floor space. The 9122 Hip Thrust Platform Bench is a dedicated platform that is more stable and quicker to use in a commercial setting, where multiple users take turns on the station without having to reassemble the setup each time.
-
The 9020 Flat Bench and the 9025 Professional Adjustable Bench are designed for intensive commercial use with barbells loaded to over 200 kg static. The steel frame and welded joints can withstand the loads typical of powerlifting, even during maximum lift training. For certainty regarding the exact load capacity of a specific model, please refer to the technical data sheet for that individual product.
-
The 9115 ADJ Metal Jerk Block was designed for jerks and push presses in Olympic weightlifting, but it is also useful for rack pulls, deadlifts from blocks, partial squats above parallel and overhead strength work. Its height adjustment makes it versatile for general athletic training, not just for Olympic athletes' programmes.
-
Regular checks on bolts (every 3–6 months in high-traffic commercial weight rooms), checking for wear on the J-hook coatings, and inspecting welds. Bench cushions should be cleaned with neutral detergents to prevent damage to the faux leather. The castors on the 9025 Adjustable Bench should be lubricated if it becomes difficult to move.
-
Yes. The 9025 and 9017 Flex Bench are designed to support the weight of a bodybuilder, even with dumbbells weighing over 40–50 kg per hand. The wide base prevents the bench from tipping over when being positioned under load. For extremely heavy dumbbells (over 60 kg per hand), always check the load capacity stated in the model’s technical specifications.
-
It isn’t compulsory for squats and bench presses, but it is recommended if you also plan to do deadlifts or weightlifting exercises in the same area. A wooden and rubber platform protects the floor from the impact of a barbell loaded with bumper plates and stabilises your movement. In a commercial weight room with high-quality technical rubber flooring, you can manage without one.
