Weight and fitness ankle weights: a comprehensive guide
Ankle weights are one of the simplest ways to introduce additional resistance to the lower limbs without having to use specialised machines. Sidea produces two main ranges: weighted ankle weights with padding and Velcro fastenings, available from 0.5 kg to 2.5 kg per piece; adjustable ankle weights ranging from 0.5 kg to 5 kg; and technical ankle weights with cable attachments for use on multi-functional stations. The choice depends on the context of use: gyms group activity and home gyms tend to favour fixed or adjustable weighted versions, whilst in the strength training sessions With the lat machine and cable station, you use ankle straps with a D-ring.
What are weight and fitness ankle weights: definition and function
An ankle brace is a strap made of technical fabric that is fastened over the malleolus using a Velcro fastening. Weighted versions contain sand, metal granules or removable pouches that allow the load to be adjusted. In versions with a hook-and-loop fastening, the function is different: the strap serves as an attachment point for a rope’s carabiner, transferring the resistance generated by the cable station to the ankle. In both cases, the additional load acts as a long lever arm relative to the hip and knee, increasing the resistive moment on the mobilising muscles.
Ankle weights work well for low-speed movements: glute kickbacks, standing abductions, standing cable leg curls, hip flexions and straight-leg raises whilst lying on your back for the abdominals. They are not a substitute for kettlebell nor the dumbbell for heavy-duty work, but they round off the range for lower load capacities.
Types of ankle weights and fitness equipment
Fixed-weight ankle weights
Padded bands with Velcro fastenings, with a pre-set weight of between 0.5 and 2.5 kg per side. The 0940-0945 range covers the basic fixed-weight category. Suitable for toning classes, Pilates, post-injury rehabilitation and supplementary training in a home gym. The Velcro fastenings allow the bands to be secured over sports trousers or directly against the skin without chafing.
Adjustable weighted ankle weights
The 0949 Adjustable Ankle Weights model allows you to remove or add internal weight pouches, so you can adjust the load on the same piece of equipment. It is the ideal choice for personal trainers with a diverse client base who need to switch between 0.5 kg and 5 kg without having to use multiple pairs of different ankle weights.
Ankle straps with cable clips
Models 9021/1 and 9022 are not weighted: they are technical ankle straps with a steel D-ring for attaching the carabiner of a cable station. The 9022 also includes a foot strap for dorsiflexion and tibialis raise exercises. They are the standard equipment for glute kick-backs, hip abduction and adduction on the lat machine or cable station.
Multifunctional straps
The R9080 All-In-One Ankle Straps model is designed for combined ankle-and-wrist use, with dual adjustment. It is used in situations where the same strap needs to be used for pull-downs, one-arm triceps exercises and lower-body exercises without changing accessories.
How to choose: a guide to use cases
Commercial gym and group activity studio
Multiple sets are required for toning, GAG and Pilates classes. The practical choice is the 0940-0945 fixed-weight ankle weights, available in 1 kg and 2 kg sets, multiplied by the number of stations. They feature a wide Velcro fastening to accommodate different ankle sizes among users.
Personal training studio
The adjustable 0949 weights take up less space: a single pair covers the entire range from 0.5 to 5 kg. Alternatively, ankle weights with cable attachments can be used if the gym has a cable machine or cable station, allowing the load to be extended beyond 5 kg using the resistance of the weight stack.
Home gyms and garage gyms
For home use, one or two adjustable ankle straps are sufficient for supplementary exercises. Those who already have a cable machine as part of a all-in-one Rack adds a 9021/1 pair to complete the lower-body training programme.
CrossFit box and athletic training
Ankle weights play a minor role in pure CrossFit. They are used in physical preparation for sports such as componentand single-leg exercises (football, running, skiing) to strengthen the hip and ankle stabilisers. Recommended model: 9022 with an underfoot strap for working the tibialis anterior.
Technical glossary
- KICK BACK
- A hip extension exercise performed on all fours or standing, used to activate the gluteus maximus. Using an ankle strap adds distal resistance, which increases the resistive moment acting on the hip joint.
- HIP ABDUCTION
- A movement in which the lower limb is moved away from the body’s midline. It involves the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. When using an ankle strap, the exercise is performed either standing or in the lateral recumbent position, with a constant load throughout the full range of motion.
- RING D
- A D-shaped steel component sewn onto the technical ankle strap serves as an attachment point for the carabiners of the rope stations. It must be dimensioned to withstand the loads transmitted by the weight stack without deforming.
- INSTEP STRAP
- An extension of the ankle strap that runs under the sole of the foot, used for dorsiflexion exercises, tibialis raises and certain active stretching movements. Featured on model 9022.
- A MOMENT OF RESILIENCE
- The product of the applied load and the distance from the joint pivot. A 2 kg ankle weight generates more resistive torque at the hip than the same 2 kg when worn on the knee, due to the longer lever arm.
- ACTIVITY GROUP
- Group classes in the fitness studio where several participants follow the same programme using low weights and high volume. Weighted ankle cuffs are standard equipment for GAG, Pilates matwork and total-body conditioning.
- PRESS-ON VELCRO
- A hook-and-loop fastening system consisting of a hook side and a loop side. In ankle supports, it allows for continuous adjustment of the circumference and must be replaced periodically when it loses its grip due to wear and tear of the inner adhesive film.
- BALLAST BAG
- A removable inner component found in adjustable ankle weights, containing metal granules or sand. By adding or removing pouches, the total weight can be adjusted whilst retaining the same outer casing.

For toning and beginner classes, the range is 0.5–1 kg per side. Intermediate users use 1.5–2 kg for kickbacks and abductions. The 5 kg per side (Sidea) represents the upper limit of the weighted category: beyond this threshold, the quality of the movement deteriorates and it is advisable to switch to ankle weights attached to a cable station, where the load can be adjusted using the weight stack.
-
Weighted ankle straps (0940–0949 series) contain the weight inside them and are used for bodyweight training. Ankle straps with attachments (9021/1 and 9022) are technical straps fitted with a steel D-ring: they have no weight of their own but are used to connect the ankle to the carabiner of a cable station, utilising the resistance of the weight stack.
-
Yes, all models feature a hook-and-loop fastening that adapts to ankles of different sizes, roughly between 20 and 32 cm in circumference. The adjustment allows you to tighten the strap above the ankle without it slipping during use. The Velcro fastening should be kept free of fabric residue to ensure it remains secure over time.
-
The weighted models 0940–0949 are designed for the ankle but work just as well on sturdy wrists, with low resistance for shadow boxing or aerobics. For dedicated hybrid use, the R9080 All-In-One model is designed with dual adjustment, making it suitable for both the ankle and the wrist.
-
Yes, the standard D-ring is compatible with carabiners from any commercial cable station, including the Sidea stations found in our all-in-one racks and premium cable stations. The connection is made using the rope’s carabiner, with no adaptors required. Just check that your rope’s carabiner has a wide enough opening to fit through the ring.
-
The fixed-weight versions of 0.5 and 1 kg are commonly used in physiotherapy to help regain strength following knee or hip injuries. For the tibialis anterior and dorsiflexion of the ankle, the 9022 model with an underfoot strap is more suitable. Clinical use must always be agreed with the physiotherapist.
-
Fabric weighted ankle weights must not be put in the washing machine due to the internal weight. They should be cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild detergent on the outer surface.
-
With weights: glute kickbacks, abductions and adductions whilst standing or lying on your side, standing leg curls, hip flexion, straight-leg raises whilst lying on your back for the abdominals, and marching on the floor. Using the D-handle versions on the cable station, add glute kick-backs with a low cable, hip abductions and standing leg curls with constant resistance throughout the full range of motion.
-
They are not designed for running. The weight applied to the ankle alters the biomechanics of the movement and shifts the stress onto the tibia and knee, increasing the risk of overuse. They should be used for low-speed analytical exercises, not for repetitive movements such as running or jumping. For dynamic weighting, weighted vests distributed by Sidea are available in the dedicated category.
-
It depends on the context. In a group activity room with lots of users, the fixed-weight 0940–0945 dumbbells are more practical: you simply pick the one with the weight you need without having to adjust anything. In personal training studios and home gyms, the adjustable 0949 weights save space: a single pair covers the entire 0.5–5 kg range by removing or adding weights from the designated pockets.
