Functional training works the body as an integrated system: movement patterns, neuromuscular coordination and joint stability, rather than isolated muscles. The equipment selected by Sidea supports this approach in the gym, the box and the PT studio.

Functional training: the Sidea selection
Functional training is not a single discipline: it is a methodological principle. It trains the body through whole-body movements that engage entire muscle chains, requiring core stability, joint mobility and motor control under load. What the products featured in this selection have in common is their ability to put that principle into practice: the kettlebell as the ultimate piece of ballistic equipment, barbell kits for multidirectional group training, the timer as a practical tool for structuring each protocol at varying intensities. No isolation of individual muscles, no machine-guided exercises. Just movement.
Who is functional training for?
The customer base in this category is broad, but their needs are specific and varied.
Strength and conditioning coaches and personal trainers use functional training as the basis for their programmes: kettlebell swings to develop posterior power, Turkish get-ups to assess and restore mobility, and structured circuits with timers to train aerobic and lactate threshold endurance in sessions lasting 20–45 minutes.
CrossFit boxes and strength and fitness centres will find the essential equipment for WODs in this selection: kettlebells in a range of weights to adapt the movements, LED timers visible from a distance to manage EMOM or AMRAP intervals, and SuperPump barbell sets for group sessions with free weights.
Traditional gyms that incorporate functional training areas into their layout can set up compact stations using this equipment, without the need for elaborate set-ups. A 24 kg kettlebell, a wall-mounted timer and a set of barbells are all you need to set up a fully-fledged training area.
Fans of home and garage gyms will find essential, space-saving equipment here. The kettlebell, in particular, offers the best balance between versatility, space requirements and the intensity of training it enables.
How to choose equipment for functional training
The first criterion is consistency with the protocol to be followed. Not all functional equipment is suitable for every purpose.
Kettlebells: the choice of weight depends on the movement and the athlete’s level. For two-handed swings, a fit adult man typically starts with 20–24 kg; for Turkish get-ups, lighter weights are often used to maintain technical quality. For women, common starting weights for swings are 12–16 kg. The Iron Black kettlebell by Sidea is available in a range of weights and is suitable for both ballistic training and strength-endurance exercises.
SuperPump dumbbell sets: available in PU (19.5 kg) and vinyl (18 kg) versions. The choice depends on the environment: PU is more resistant to heavy wear and accidental drops, whilst vinyl is better suited to group activities with controlled impact. Both are designed for group sessions where the load is distributed across the whole body.
LED timer: an often-overlooked piece of kit, yet central to the practical management of training sessions. A timer visible from a distance allows you to structure Tabata protocols (20/10), bespoke intervals and rounds with fixed recovery periods. Indispensable in any setting where several athletes are being managed at the same time.
A cross-cutting principle: whatever equipment is chosen, joint mobility and technical proficiency in the fundamental movements are prerequisites. Poorly executed functional training is not functional training.

Domande frequenti - Functional training
-
Guided isotonic machines isolate specific muscle groups within a fixed plane of movement. Functional training focuses on multi-joint and multi-planar movements that engage entire muscle chains, the proprioceptive system and core stabilisation. The aim is not isolated hypertrophy, but the quality and efficiency of movement under load.
-
It requires a basic level of technical ability, particularly for equipment such as kettlebells. Movements such as the swing or the snatch have a real learning curve: if performed incorrectly, they increase the risk of injury to the lower back and shoulders. A programme led by a certified instructor — for example, following the StrongFirst method — is the most effective approach for beginners.
-
For advanced individual training, a basic set comprises three weights: a light one for complex technical movements (e.g. Turkish get-up), a medium one for standard ballistic exercises (swing, clean) and a heavy one for strength exercises. In a group setting, the number of weights should be multiplied by the number of stations, ideally with at least two different weights per athlete.
-
The classic Tabata routine consists of 8 rounds of 20 seconds of exercise and 10 seconds of recovery, totalling 4 minutes per exercise. The Sidea LED timer can be programmed with customisable intervals: you can set the number of rounds, the exercise and recovery times, and an audible signal to mark the transition. In a multi-exercise session, you typically complete 3–5 consecutive Tabata blocks.
-
The PU (polyurethane) coating is more resistant to abrasion, impact and prolonged exposure to moisture: ideal for high-traffic environments such as gyms and training studios with multiple sessions a day. Vinyl is better suited to moderate-intensity group activity settings, where the sets are used with care and stored away regularly. Both offer the same functional design of a barbell with integrated weights.
-
It is compatible. Functional training is not synonymous with low-load or high-repetition training. A Turkish get-up with a heavy kettlebell, a clean & press with a submaximal load, or a heavy swing with low repetitions are all fully in line with functional training and develop real strength. The key distinction is between functional movements and muscle isolation, not between high and low loads.
