EcoGym: the Sidea selection
EcoGym brings together all Sidea products dedicated to technical flooring for high-intensity fitness environments. The common feature is the double-layer structure made from recycled rubber: a shock-absorbing bottom layer that absorbs impacts and a compact top layer that ensures stability and grip whilst performing exercises. The range covers a wide spectrum: from a minimum thickness of 5 mm for personal training studios and home gyms up to 35 mm for the synthetic turf variant, designed for outdoor installations or calisthenics areas. Every product in the range meets specific criteria regarding expected load, frequency of use and the type of underlying floor.
Who is EcoGym for?
The most common question asked by those setting up a fitness space is a simple one: how thick does the flooring really need to be? The answer depends on what happens on the floor every day.
In CrossFit boxes and professional functional training studios, the floor must be able to withstand the impact of loaded barbells, kettlebells dropped forcefully after a set of swings, and movements such as burpees and box jumps performed for dozens of consecutive repetitions. In these settings, thicknesses of 2 cm and above are the reasonable minimum requirement. The 2 cm Class B model is designed precisely for this purpose: a Class B surface for commercial environments with high usage frequency.
For personal training studios and home gyms using light or medium-weight dumbbells, kettlebells up to 24–32 kg and controlled drops, the 1 cm thickness is sufficient and allows for a less invasive installation on existing parquet or tiled floors. The 1 cm Premium models are also available in edge and corner versions, which are useful for modular installations with a neat perimeter finish.
Anyone setting up outdoor areas for calisthenics training or functional zones in a garden or courtyard can choose the 35 mm EcoGym Garden: a product made from artificial grass which is weather-resistant and allows for the creation of stable, well-drained work surfaces on any compact sub-base.
Sports schools, multi-purpose centres and amateur sports associations (ASDs) will also find suitable solutions in the EcoGym range: the modular design of the interlocking system allows the flooring to be adapted to irregular spaces, corridors or partially enclosed training areas without the need for building work.
How to choose
Three factors determine the right choice: thickness, size and service class.
Thickness. 5 mm is suitable for surfaces that are already cushioned or for light use without dropping weights. 1 cm covers most applications in home gyms and personal training studios with controlled loads. 2 cm is the standard for professional gyms with free weights being dropped. 35 mm is reserved for outdoor use or areas requiring very high levels of impact absorption.
Format. Straight-edge slabs are ideal for covering large, regular surfaces, with side-by-side joints and perimeter fixing. Puzzle-style modules are more practical for irregular spaces or temporary installations, and allow sections to be added or removed without dismantling the entire layout. The edge and corner versions of the puzzle-style format ensure a clean perimeter finish, which is essential when the flooring is left exposed.
Usage class. The Class B model is approved for areas with heavy footfall and continuous professional use. The Premium models stand out for their superior surface quality, material density and aesthetic consistency: a difference that is noticeable in environments where appearance matters as much as function, such as high-end PT studios or fitness spaces open to the public.
One factor that is often overlooked is the underlying floor. On bare concrete or an unfinished screed, any thickness will work well. On tiles, the smooth surface requires care to ensure the stability of the modules, especially in non-interlocking versions. On parquet, a minimum thickness (5 mm or 1 cm) is preferable to avoid creating excessive height differences at doorways or transition points.
Sidea products for EcoGym
The range is divided into four distinct families.
EcoGym Floor — straight-edge tiles. Available in thicknesses of 1 cm (SKU 9201S) and 2 cm (SKU 9202S). Straight-edged format for full-surface coverage. Ideal for large halls with a fixed layout. The 2 cm version is the most commonly used in functional training professional.
EcoGym Premium — premium-quality slabs and modules. Available in 1 cm (SKU 9201P) and 2 cm (SKU 9202P), with interlocking versions for corners (SKU 9201/2P) and edges (SKU 9201/1P). The higher density of the material results in a more compact surface, with less deformation under repeated loading. These are the recommended versions for spaces with high aesthetic requirements.
EcoGym Floor 5 mm. (SKU 9201P5) Its reduced thickness does not mean a compromise on functionality: this version is designed for light-duty use, particularly in settings where home gym with controlled weights or as an additional layer on surfaces that already have a shock-absorbing base.
EcoGym Floor 2cm Class B. (SKU 9202B) The Class B-certified version for intensive commercial use. Designed for CrossFit boxes, weightlifting areas and any space where weights are dropped on a daily basis and the load per square metre is significant.
EcoGym Garden 35 mm. (SKU 9203) The only outdoor product in the range. Synthetic grass surface with a 35 mm rubber base, which is well-draining and weather-resistant. Suitable for areas calisthenics outdoor areas, school sports grounds or functional areas in the garden.

For environments where exercises involving the controlled dropping of barbells or kettlebells weighing over 20 kg are carried out, the recommended minimum thickness is 2 cm. For loads exceeding 60–70 kg or repeated daily drops, the 2 cm Class B version is the best choice for long-term durability and impact absorption.

Yes. The technical rubber puzzle modules are laid directly onto tiles without the need for adhesives or structural alterations. It is important that the underlying surface is flat, clean and free from significant irregularities. On very smooth tiles, it is advisable to check the lateral stability of the perimeter modules, adding the finishing edges included in the range if necessary.
-
The Premium range uses a higher-density rubber in the surface layer, resulting in a more compact and uniform finish. In practical terms, this means less deformation under repeated loading and a neater appearance. The standard Floor version offers comparable cushioning performance at a lower cost, and is the preferred choice for large areas where aesthetics are less of a priority.

EcoGym Garden is designed to be installed on compacted and stable surfaces: concrete, tarmac, screed or well-compacted permeable paving. On compacted earth or loose gravel, the base does not provide the necessary stability whilst performing the exercises. For uneven natural surfaces, a levelled base must be prepared before installation.
-
EcoGym interlocking tiles have standard dimensions of 100 x 100 cm. The basic calculation is: total area in m² = number of tiles required. You should allow for an extra 5–8% to cover edge and corner sections, and make separate provision for perimeter finishing strips. For irregular spaces or those with internal pillars, the Gym Design Sidea service can provide a detailed installation plan.
-
The technical rubber used in the EcoGym range is a low-maintenance material. Routine cleaning should be carried out using water and neutral detergents, avoiding harsh solvents which could cause the surface to deteriorate over time. For outdoor installations using EcoGym Garden, periodic washing with water and an annual check of the modules’ stability are sufficient, particularly after harsh winters.
