Irisin the sports hormone

Irisin is a hormone discovered in 2012 by researchers at Harvard Medical School that is produced by skeletal muscle during physical activity. This hormone has attracted the attention of the scientific community for its multiple benefits on human health.

  • Browning, the conversion of white to brown adipose tissue: one of irisin's main effects is its ability to transform white adipose tissue, which stores energy in the form of fat, into brown adipose tissue, which instead burns energy to produce heat. This process, known as 'browning', increases the body's energy expenditure, contributing to weight loss and improved metabolism.
  • Bone health and osteoporosis prevention: irisin plays a significant role in bone health. It stimulates the formation of osteoblasts, the cells responsible for synthesising bone tissue, thereby strengthening the skeletal structure and helping to prevent osteoporosis. This effect is particularly relevant for older people, who are at greater risk of bone loss.
  • Cognitive benefits and neuroprotection: recent studies suggest that irisin may also have positive effects on the brain. In animal models, increased irisin levels were associated with improvements in cognitive function and memory, indicating a potential neuroprotective role that could be useful in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Stimulation through exercise

Blood irisin levels increase significantly during physical activity, particularly with aerobic exercise and high-intensity training (HIIT). This link underlines the importance of exercise not only for maintaining physical fitness, but also for its beneficial metabolic, bone and cognitive effects.
