The angled barbell — also known as the EZ barbell — is designed with a wavy-profile bar that allows for a semi-pronated grip, reducing the strain on the wrists and elbows during isolation exercises for the biceps and triceps.
Available in an Olympic-style loadable version, a rubber-preloaded version and as a Triceps Bar
Suitable for both professional gyms and home gyms
Compatible with 28 mm discs (standard versions) and 50 mm Olympic plates

Angled Barbell: the Sidea selection
The angled barbell, commonly known as an EZ barbell or curl bar, is characterised by its curved bar, with angles typically ranging between 30° and 45°. This design is not merely aesthetic: it actually alters the position of the forearm during elbow flexion and extension movements, allowing for a semi-pronated or semi-supinated grip depending on the grip chosen. The result is less strain on the radioulnar joint and the wrist tendons compared to a straight barbell, with a more manageable load distribution over the long term. Sidea offers five models covering the main usage requirements: from the loadable Olympic EZ bar to pre-loaded sets with rubber coating, right through to the Triceps Bar.
Who is the Angled Barbell suitable for?
The most obvious candidate is anyone working on upper-body hypertrophy with a high weekly training volume. A trainer who prescribes 4–5 sets of EZ curls three times a week knows full well that the angled version allows that volume to be maintained without placing excessive stress on the wrists – a common problem with the straight Olympic barbell used for isolation exercises.

The EZ bar allows for a semi-pronated grip, which reduces forearm rotation compared to curls using a straight barbell. This limits the stress on the radioulnar joint and the tendons of the wrist, enabling you to handle high training volumes with less accumulation of joint stress. Muscle activation remains comparable, with a slight variation in the emphasis between the long and short heads of the biceps depending on the angle of the grip.

The Olympic Sidea models (9027 and 9027P) have a 50 mm seat and are fully compatible with rubber bumper plates, cast iron discs and any Olympic-sized plates. The rubber-preloaded models (8610–8645 series) do not require additional plates: the weight is fixed and incorporated into the barbell’s structure.

The Triceps Bar — with parallel vertical handles — is designed primarily for triceps extensions with a neutral grip: French presses, standing overhead extensions and barbell kickbacks. The neutral position of the forearm reduces the involvement of the wrists and shoulders compared to the traditional EZ bar. The EZ bar remains more versatile for curls, skullcrushers and mixed variations. They are not directly interchangeable.
-
Yes. The pre-loaded rubber sets in the 8610–8645 series are designed for high-usage environments. The rubber coating protects the floor and reduces noise during placement. They are commonly used in the isolation zones of commercial gyms, where the need to handle loads quickly between sets justifies the choice of a pre-loaded bar over a barbell that can be loaded with discs.
-
Standard EZ bars have angles ranging from 30° to 45° at the grip areas. This creates two grip positions: a wider one with the forearm in slight supination and a narrower one with the forearm in semi-pronation. The narrower grip is generally preferred for standard curls; the wider grip is used for skullcrushers and lying triceps extensions, where slight pronation improves control of the movement.
-
For loadable models, a rack is not strictly necessary but can be useful for loading the barbell on the floor and lifting it into position. Typical EZ bar exercises — curls, skullcrushers, French presses — are normally performed from a seated or supine position, picking the barbell up from the floor or from a floor-mounted support. Pre-loaded sets are stored on dedicated racks for pre-loaded barbells.
