AED: the Sidea selection

An AED — Automated External Defibrillator — is not strictly speaking a piece of fitness equipment, but it is an integral part of any responsible sports facility. In Italy, Decree-Law No. 11 of 18 February 2022 and subsequent ministerial circulars have made it compulsory for sports facilities meeting certain criteria to have an AED on site. Sidea offers the Rescue Sam system: a semi-automatic defibrillator designed and manufactured entirely in Italy by Progetti Srl (Trofarello, Turin), combined with a wall-mounted bracket that ensures it is securely fixed, visible and immediately accessible in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Who is the DAE for?

The regulations apply to a very wide range of facilities. Professional gyms, CrossFit boxes, fitness centres with regular members, swimming pools and municipal multi-purpose centres: all these venues are subject to the requirement to provide the necessary equipment. But beyond the formal requirement, this issue concerns anyone who manages spaces where people — of varying ages, fitness levels and medical histories — engage in high-intensity training.

Fitness coaches and personal trainers working in their own or shared premises must be familiar with the regulations and ensure that an AED is present, in working order and accessible. The same applies to amateur sports associations (ASDs) that manage sports facilities, even small ones. In an environment of intense training — whether it be strength Whether it’s training, HIIT or amateur competitions — the presence of an AED and staff trained in its use is a minimum safety standard.

How to choose

When choosing an AED for a sports facility, at least four practical factors must be taken into account.

Device classification. The Rescue Sam is a semi-automatic defibrillator (AED): it analyses the heart rhythm and guides the operator with voice prompts, but requires the operator to press a button to deliver the shock. It is the most common type in non-clinical settings and the one required by Italian sports regulations.

Positioning. The wall-mounted bracket (SKU 0011) allows the device to be installed in a fixed, clearly marked and secure location. Signage must be visible from a distance: the time taken to access the AED from the furthest point in the facility is a critical factor — every minute’s delay in delivering the shock significantly reduces the chances of survival.

Maintenance and expiry dates. The adhesive pads (electrodes) and batteries have an expiry date. The management protocol must provide for periodic, documented checks. As Rescue Sam is manufactured in Italy, it guarantees the availability of spare parts certified on the domestic market.

Staff training. An AED on its own is not enough. The regulations stipulate that at least one person per shift must be trained in the use of the device and in BLSD (Basic Life Support and Defibrillation) procedures. This must be organised separately from the purchase of the device.

Domande frequenti - DAE

  • Yes. Decree-Law No. 11 of 18 February 2022, which was subsequently converted into law with amendments, has extended the requirement to provide AEDs to numerous categories of sports facilities. The specific requirements vary depending on the type and size of the facility. You should check whether these apply to you with your legal adviser or your sports doctor, and consult the latest circulars issued by the Ministry of Health and CONI.
  • A semi-automatic AED automatically analyses the patient’s heart rhythm and determines whether an electric shock is required. If so, it guides the operator with voice prompts and requires the operator to press a button manually to deliver the shock. No specific medical expertise is required to use it, but certified BLSD training is necessary to carry out the entire rescue sequence correctly.
  • The AED must be positioned in a visible location, clearly signposted and accessible within the shortest possible time from any area of the premises. The guidelines generally specify an access time of less than 3 minutes. The dedicated wall-mounted bracket ensures a stable and easily identifiable installation. In multi-storey buildings or those with separate areas, it is advisable to consider installing multiple devices.
  • Electrodes (adhesive pads) and batteries have expiry dates set by the manufacturer and must be replaced before the date indicated, regardless of usage. It is good practice to carry out a visual inspection of the device and check the self-diagnostic signal at least once a month, and to document these checks. Failure to replace these components will render the device inoperable and may constitute a breach of regulations.
  • In Italy, the law permits the use of an AED even by non-medical staff, provided they have received appropriate training. The BLSD (Basic Life Support and Defibrillation) course is the standard training programme, delivered by accredited organisations (IRC, AHA, Red Cross). Sports regulations stipulate that at least one trained person must be present during activities. Training must be renewed periodically in accordance with the certifying body’s guidelines.

Being manufactured in Italy guarantees verifiable quality standards and the availability of genuine spare parts — electrodes and batteries — on the domestic market, with shorter lead times compared to imported products.
