Plates & Bumper plates

PLATES SELECTION GUIDE

Plate can be divided into three categories: coated ('rubberized') - solid ('bumper') - Technical.

Coated discs are metal discs coated with rubber or polyurethane, solid discs are discs made entirely of rubber or polyurethane.

The combination of these elements: coated or solid, rubber or polyurethane, determines characteristics, intended use, production cost; polyurethane has the highest production cost.

Technical, on the other hand, are sui generis discs, i.e. they are produced according to their own solutions to meet specific technical requirements.

If we consider the disc simply as a weight, the use of metal is certainly the most suitable solution, in terms of cost but also in terms of bulk and thus the possibilities of loading on tools and racks.

Considering, on the other hand, that in the context of weightlifting, the disc must also be resilient (resist dynamic forces, i.e. impacts on the floor, by absorbing energy with elastic deformations), the use of rubber fulfils this function.

Finally, when evaluated in the context of an equipment room, the discus must also have aesthetic, safety and handling characteristics, with comfortable grips, such as metal discs covered with rubber or polyurethane.

Therefore, starting with this brief introduction, let us look at the main characteristics of the various disc models we produce.

Rubber-coated metal discs - Series 9030/3-9035/3 Rubber Plate

Composed of sizes 1.25; 2.5; 5; 10; 20 kg, exclusively in black, this line was created with the aim of getting the best value for money for multi-purpose discs with handle.

The metal makes it possible to mould the grips while maintaining high structural strength, the rubber provides minimal resilience and good accident prevention and grip comfort. They are the most aesthetically spartan discs in our production and can also be used on technical floors as long as the fall is always accompanied and well controlled.

Polyurethane-coated metal discs - Series 9030-9036 PU Plate

Composed of sizes 1.25; 2.5; 5; 10; 15; 20; 25 kg, two-tone black/grey, this line was created with the aim of achieve the highest quality and aesthetic standards for multi-purpose discs with handle.

Metal makes it possible to mould the grips while maintaining high structural strength, polyurethane provides additional strength, good accident prevention characteristics and a very high level of grip comfort. The discs are harder to the touch than rubberised discs, but the finish achievable with polyurethane allows for very rounded edges. Polyurethane discs are also characterised by their clear colouring, absence of odour, and absence of mould marks, so that flawless aesthetics is one of the most important features of PU Plates. The wear and light degradation of polyurethane is much lower than that of rubber.

Polyurethane Solid Discs - Series 9040/3 - 9046/3 PU Bumper Plate COLOR

Composed of sizes 5; 10; 15; 20; 25 kg, coloured according to the IWF standard, this bumper line is made from metal discs covered with polyurethane. As already mentioned, polyurethane can be considered the best material for producing discs. Extremely high strength, extraordinary compactness, low rebound, no odour, sharp colours, no imperfections and mould marks, perfect coupling with the steel plate, PU discs represent the best possible solution in terms of reliability, aesthetics and overall quality. The wear and light degradation of polyurethane is significantly lower than that of rubber. In addition, due to the high density of the material, PU discs have a very low thickness, which allows a barbell to be loaded over 350 kg, almost as if it were a metal disc, but with the advantage of being more resilient. However, the lower elastic deformation compared to rubber can also be considered a limitation for those who prefer softer, more bouncy bumpers.

Solid Rubber Discs - Series 9040/1-9044/1 Rubber Bumper Plate

Solid bumper plates are made for weightlifting, powerlifting, cross training and therefore to resist the barbell falling to the ground, hence the name bumper = bumper. To ensure evenly distributed support, as well as a fixed height of the bar from the floor, the bumper plates are all produced with the same outer diameter, conventionally set at 45 cm by the various federal regulations. Due to its mechanical characteristics, synthetic rubber is the most suitable material for making this type of plate.

The 9040/1-9044/1 series, consisting of sizes 5; 10; 15; 20 kg, was created with the aim of getting the best value for moneyThis is why it is only produced in black, unpainted and with a steel ring.

Solid Rubber Competition Bumper Plates - Series 9042/5 - 9046/5 Competition Rubber Bumper Plate

Composed of the sizes 10; 15; 20; 25 kg, colours according to the IWF standard (5 kg bumper discs are not used in weightlifting competitions, but smaller fractional rubberised discs: Code 9038/50). This bumper line was created with the aim of achieving the highest quality standards for competition discs. The rubber used is the same as in the Pro-Training line, but the disc is fitted with a large 185 mm diameter steel plate to reinforce the central area, reduce the tolerance with the barbell and also, most importantly, reduce the amount of rubber in the disc. Central compactness, precision insertion on the rocker arm, reduced thickness and low rebound effect characterise the Competition Bumper Plate.

Technical Discs - Series 9038/05 - 9038/25 FRACTIONAL PLATES FRICTION GRIP - MY2021

Composed of the sizes 0.5; 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5 kg, coloured according to the IWF standard, they are small metal discs covered with rubber, so that the weight to be lifted can be divided. The bore does not have a ring but features a rubber membrane that can exert a frictional grip on the barbell. Thanks to this solution, the fractional discs can be positioned outside the disc clamp collars so that they can be inserted and removed more quickly. In fact, the rubber membrane allows loading but, by adhering to the disc holder, does not allow the disc to move or slip out easily due to gravity; FRICTION GRIP function.

Technical Plates - 9040/25 Technical Plates 2,5 kg

Solid PVC disc, without ring, manufactured with a thickness of only 2 cm in order to achieve the same diameter as the bumper discs, 45 cm, and thus bring the barbell to the same height from the ground. This allows Technical Plates 2.5 to be used in combination with the bumper discs, as the space they take up on the barbell is very small. The material, which is hard and resistant, also allows these discs to be used on technical floors as long as the fall is always accompanied and controlled.

Technical Hollow Plates - Series 9040/25H - 9040/50H

Composed of the 2.5 and 5 kg sizes, they are hollow polyethylene discs, without rings, produced with a high thickness, 6 and 8.5 cm, so as to achieve the same diameter as the bumper discs, 45 cm, bring the barbell to the same height from the ground, while maintaining the possibility, despite the very low weight, of dropping the barbell on rubberized floors.

Inspiration

There are several elements to consider when setting up a training area: optimisation of available space, functionality, aesthetics and, of course, cost. The possibilities in this respect are manifold and embrace the most diverse areas, for each of which an optimal solution can be configured. Fundamental components within these configurations are certainly the training structures (or racks), the technical flooring, the storage solutions, and finally, the equipment.

Domande frequenti - Piastre gommate- dischi bumper - Bumper plate PU

  • Black rubber bumpers have a low dead bounce and are more affordable, making them suitable for CrossFit boxes and high-volume functional training studios. Polyurethane (PU) discs offer tighter dimensional tolerances, IWF colours, less bounce and greater durability during repeated overhead drops, making them the typical choice for weightlifting platforms and technical training.
  • The Sidea bumper plates have a 50 mm Olympic-standard hole, compatible with weightlifting, powerlifting, axle and curl barbells with an Olympic-standard socket. The Super Pump plates, on the other hand, have a 28 mm hole and are designed for pump barbells and group activity kits. The outer diameter of the full-size bumper plates is 450 mm, in accordance with IWF standards.
  • The 2.5 and 5 kg flat plates retain the standard diameter of 450 mm but are lighter in weight: they allow you to practise snatches, cleans and jerks at the same height as full-weight plates, without putting excessive strain on your joints or the floor. They are also useful in home gyms with limited floor space and for those learning Olympic lifts.
  • Competition bumper plates have weight tolerances of ±10 g, IWF colours by size (red 25 kg, blue 20 kg, yellow 15 kg, green 10 kg) and a calibrated diameter of 450 mm. They are used in weightlifting competitions, local meets and on the platforms of gyms hosting competitions or personal best (PR) attempts with verified loads.
  • The Sidea fractional plates (from 0.5 to 2.5 kg) are used for micro-incremental load progressions. They are essential in powerlifting for overcoming technical plateaus, in weightlifting for adding a total of 500 g to the barbell, and in strength programmes such as 5/3/1 or the Texas Method, where the standard 2.5 kg increase per side is excessive.
  • For a CrossFit box with 8–12 stations, it is best to start with multiple sets of 100 or 150 kg of black rubber or crumb rubber bumper plates, supplemented with competition plates on one or two dedicated platforms. The 9040/1K150 and 9040/7K100 kits cover the requirements for standard WODs involving snatches, cleans and thrusters, whilst the technique plates facilitate the skills section.
  • Yes. The crumb bumper is made from high-density compressed recycled rubber: it absorbs the impact of overhead drops without deforming and has a long service life, even in high-traffic environments. The finish is rougher than that of PU, but the balance between price, quietness and durability is excellent for functional training studios.
  • Yes, provided the barbell has 50 mm Olympic sleeves. The Sidea bumpers are compatible with weightlifting and powerlifting barbells. For isolation exercises or group activities with light loads, however, Super Pump plates with a 28 mm hole are used on dedicated pump barbells.
  • Although the bumpers absorb much of the impact, it is recommended that the floor beneath weightlifting platforms be fitted with technical rubber flooring at least 20–30 mm thick, or a dedicated weightlifting platform with a central wooden insert. This protects the floor, reduces noise and extends the life of the weight plates.
  • They are not weight plates in the strict sense, but they follow the principle of variable resistance: the 9082 and 9082/1 chains add progressive resistance to the barbell as the movement progresses. They are used in powerlifting for accommodating resistance on squats, bench presses and deadlifts, improving acceleration during the lockout phase without overloading the bottom position.
