Massage Ball: the Sidea selection

Massage balls are tools for active recovery and neuromuscular preparation that cut across several areas of training: from pre-session warm-ups to cool-downs, and from joint mobility work to localised myofascial release. What they have in common is their ability to target specific soft tissues — muscles, fasciae, tendons — through manual or bodyweight pressure, without requiring any additional equipment. Domande frequenti - Massage Ball

  • The foam roller works on large muscle groups using a longitudinal rolling motion. The massage ball concentrates pressure on a specific point, making it possible to target small and anatomically complex areas such as the sole of the foot, the shoulder rotator cuff or the piriformis muscle. The two tools are complementary, not alternatives.
  • For pre-workout myofascial release, 60–90 seconds per area is sufficient to alter tissue compliance without causing excessive muscle inhibition. During the post-workout cool-down, you can work on each area for longer – even 2–3 minutes per area – using sustained pressure or slow rolling. The frequency depends on your weekly training volume.
  • Cork provides medium pressure with a more natural tactile response, and is slightly porous: it better absorbs the micro-irregularities of the body’s surface. It is suitable for those new to self-myofascial release or for daily use on sensitive areas. The hard ball, made from a rigid material, is best suited to athletes accustomed to deep pressure on dense muscle groups.
  • Spike balls are primarily recommended for the soles of the feet, calves and glutes. For the lumbar and dorsal regions, it is preferable to use a peanut ball or a cork ball, which distributes pressure without concentrating it on the spinous processes. When using these on areas of the spine, care must always be taken with regard to posture and the intensity of the pressure applied.
  • No. Its main function is proprioceptive stimulation: the bumper-surfaced pot creates controlled instability under the foot, activating the receptors in the ankle and improving postural control. It is used both as a balance training aid and as a tool for warming up the feet before weightlifting sessions or prolonged periods of standing.
  • Yes. In group sessions focusing on holistic training, yoga fitness or mobility, massage balls — particularly in sets such as the Holistic Cork Kit — can be easily incorporated into guided sequences. Each participant works independently on their own body, following the trainer’s instructions. Their ease of use makes them suitable even for those with no specific experience of self-myofascial release.
